Dry Like The Ocean’s Salted Sun
Dry Like The Ocean’s Salted Sun is a photographic journey through Los Angeles, told in a series of point-of-view images that trace a solitary walk from the suburbs to the sea. Shot in the harsh clarity of Southern California sunlight, the project explores the disorientation, longing, and reckoning that accompany recovery from alcoholism.
Channeling my own experience with sobriety, these images capture moments of physical and emotional exposure—where the brightness of the day feels both punishing and redemptive, and the city itself becomes a mirror for internal struggle. Whether this walk occurs during the bleary haze of a hangover, the fragile beginning of “Day One,” or years into sustained recovery, the tension between motion and stillness, isolation and revelation, remains constant.
Mentored under the guidance of Magnum photographer Matt Black, this project is rooted in a documentary sensibility while embracing the poetic contradictions of a city where glamour and grit live side by side. Dry Like The Ocean’s Salted Sun is both a confession and a meditation—a visual attempt to chart what’s left behind, and what lies ahead, when one steps out of the shadow of addiction and into the light.
